AT FIRST SIGHT: ‘New York, I Love You’ but what if I don’t?

I mean I do.  But in an easy-going, yeah New York is cool, duh, kind of way.  So I’m going into ‘New York, I Love You’ more intrigued at the idea of established filmmakers making shorts with well known actors, some of whom I adore, with a common thread.

And finally we have a trailer.

1 – The common thread is ‘Love’ apparently.  Now I saw ‘Paris, Je t’aime’ when it came out and I don’t remember it being all ‘mwah mwah gushy gushy Paris let’s make out.’  Or was it?  All love stories?  The one I remember most (big shocker) is the Coen Bros entry and that wasn’t exactly romantic.

I just hope the characters don’t actually talk ABOUT New York.  If I hear ‘the greatest city in the world’ even once I’ll walk out.  Not really, but I’ll definitely roll my eyes.  Cause, ugh, if my last trip to NYC left one impression it was that the flames of New Yorkers’ superiority complex don’t need any fanning.

2 – My boy LaBeouf gets only ONE second of screentime?  I think I heard from someone somewhere that maybe his film was kind of … good?  But I do admit that Drea De Matteo and James Caan in a scene is rather delicious.  Even if that segment is directed by my nemesis Brett Ratner, I’m opening my mind, forcibly.

3 – The b inside of me loves that Scarlett Johansson’s film, one she directed, didn’t make the final.  They were careful to say it just didn’t fit in, not that it sucked, but choose what you want to believe.  I have.  (Not sure if I’ve mentioned, but it’ll be a running theme that she is way overrated on the talent scale, IMO.)

It’s a bit hard to know what to expect from this trailer, we can only hope it’s not as gooey as it looks.  Going all romance was kind of a gamble no?   Was the city itself not a strong enough theme on its own??   Am I just down on love at the moment and feeling bad for my hometown???  Los Angeles, I love you.  I do.  I’m planning my installment for the ‘L.A. I Love You’ that will never get made.  It’s also a love story.  One in which I fall in love with a back yard….
